GroupMe is still free and still works in the app. What is going away is SMS mode, the option that let a parent or grandparent take part in a group by plain text message without installing anything. GroupMe announced in August 2026 that it is winding down two-way SMS on a rolling basis (source, checked Oct 2026), and we cover what that means for your members on our GroupMe SMS shutdown page.
The key decision is app-required vs plain-SMS reach. If every member has a smartphone and will install another app, almost any free group app replaces GroupMe. If even a few members will not (or cannot) run an app, you need a tool that delivers messages as real text messages. Only two tools on this list do that: RallyText and Remind. Everything else is an app.
Disclosure: RallyText is our product, and it is listed first. Every price and feature line for another tool links to the page we checked on their site in October 2026; prices change, so confirm before you buy. Where a vendor page did not state something, we say so instead of guessing.
The 9 best GroupMe alternatives for teams
-
RallyText Ours
Best for: teams, troops, choirs and congregations where some members will never install an app, and for coaches with minors on the roster who need Safe Sport compliance built in.
- Members receive
- Plain SMS on any phone, including flip phones. No app, no account, no notification settings. Leaders use a web dashboard or text keywords to the team's own number.
- Pricing
- From $10/mo (Pay As You Go, broadcast-only, 200 credits); two-way plans with inbox and Group Thread from $29/mo (2,000 credits). Dedicated number on every plan. 3-day free trial, no card required. full pricing
- Limitation
- No free tier, and it is a messaging tool, not a team-management suite: there is no registration, payments, or photo albums. The Pay As You Go plan is send-only (no replies).

-
TeamSnap
Best for: sports teams that want scheduling, RSVPs, payments and chat in one place and are happy to live inside an app.
- Members receive
- App. Team chat and alerts are features of the TeamSnap app; plain-SMS delivery is not listed on its plans page.
- Pricing
- Free for small teams (fewer than 15 players); Premium $18.99/mo or $10.83/mo billed annually; Ultra $25.99/mo or $13.75/mo billed annually with unlimited roster spots. source, checked Oct 2026
- Limitation
- You are paying for a full management platform even if all you needed was a reliable way to reach every family, and the free plan caps the roster below 15 players.
See RallyText vs TeamSnap.
-
Remind
Best for: teachers and school-based groups, and the one other tool here that lists SMS text as a delivery option.
- Members receive
- SMS text, app, or email, per Remind's plans page. Members pick how they receive messages.
- Pricing
- Remind Chat is free for teachers and individuals, with up to 100 classes per account and 150 participants per class. Remind Hub (up to 5,000 participants per class) is quote-based; contact sales. source, checked Oct 2026
- Limitation
- Built around the classroom model (classes, students, teachers), and the free plan caps each class at 150 participants, which a large club or congregation can outgrow.

-
BAND
Best for: groups that want a GroupMe-like social feed with posts, a calendar, polls, photo albums and live video, all free.
- Members receive
- App. Members get push alerts for new announcements, schedules and posts in the BAND app.
- Pricing
- Free, with in-app purchases, from NAVER Corp. source, checked Oct 2026
- Limitation
- App-only. A time-sensitive cancellation is a post in a feed that depends on the member having installed the app and left notifications on.

-
Heja
Best for: single sports teams that want a free, simple team-chat and scheduling app and do not mind ads.
- Members receive
- App. Heja describes itself as a sports team management and communication app, downloaded from the App Store or Google Play. source, checked Oct 2026
- Pricing
- Free (ad-supported); Team Pro from $8.33; Team Pro Max adds ad-free for all members, price not shown on the pricing page. source, checked Oct 2026
- Limitation
- The free tier shows ads to your families, and like BAND it only reaches members who install the app.
-
WhatsApp
Best for: groups whose members already use WhatsApp daily, which is common for international families and many adult clubs.
- Members receive
- App. WhatsApp is downloaded for phone, desktop or web and runs over a data connection.
- Pricing
- Free ("data charges may apply"). source, checked Oct 2026
- Limitation
- It is a group chat, so every reply goes to everyone, and a member who does not already use WhatsApp has to install it and create an account before they see anything from you.
-
Signal, or a plain group text
Best for: very small groups (a coaching staff, a committee) that want zero setup. Signal if you want encryption; a carrier group text if you want zero apps.
- Members receive
- Signal: app, over your phone's data connection. A carrier group text (iMessage, Android Messages): plain SMS/MMS on any phone, no app.
- Pricing
- Signal is free, run by an independent nonprofit funded by grants and donations. source, checked Oct 2026 A carrier group text costs nothing beyond your existing phone plan.
- Limitation
- Both are reply-all threads with no admin controls, no roster, and no delivery log, and a carrier group text exposes everyone's personal number to everyone else.
See RallyText vs group text.
-
Slack or Discord
Best for: adult communities and clubs that want channels and threads, not a single group chat. Discord for gaming and hobby communities, Slack for organizations that already use it at work.
- Members receive
- App or desktop/web client, with notifications you configure per channel.
- Pricing
- Slack: Free with 90 days of message history; Pro $8.75 per user/mo monthly or $7.25 per user/mo billed annually. source, checked Oct 2026 Discord: free; optional Nitro Basic $2.99/mo or Nitro $9.99/mo for perks. source, checked Oct 2026
- Limitation
- Neither was built for a roster of parents. Slack's paid tiers are priced per user, and both assume members will learn a channel-based workspace.
-
SportsEngine HQ
Best for: leagues and clubs that need registration, websites and background checks for a whole organization, with communication tools included.
- Members receive
- App and web. The pricing page lists "communication tools" but does not describe how messages are delivered to members.
- Pricing
- SportsEngine HQ for youth sports organizations: $79/mo, or $67/mo billed annually. Background-check screening is priced separately per check. source, checked Oct 2026
- Limitation
- Priced and designed for an organization, not a single team. If you run one team, it is far more platform than you need.

Side-by-side comparison
How to choose
Do all your members have smartphones, and will they install one more app?
Be honest about the second half. Most rosters have at least one grandparent, one parent on a work phone, or one teenager with a flip phone. If you can name those people, an app-only tool will quietly leave them out, and you will end up texting them separately anyway. That is the case for RallyText or Remind. If everyone will install an app, BAND, Heja, WhatsApp or GroupMe itself will do the job for free.
Do you need replies, or just announcements?
A coach sending "practice moved to 5pm" does not need a group chat; a group chat is where that message gets buried. A committee coordinating a fundraiser does. Broadcast tools (RallyText) send one message to everyone and keep replies private to the sender. Group apps (WhatsApp, BAND, GroupMe, Discord) make every reply visible to everyone. Pick the model that matches how your group actually talks. RallyText's Group Thread gives you both per group if you need them.
Is this one team or a whole league?
Single teams should ignore organization-priced products like SportsEngine HQ. Leagues and clubs that need registration and background checks should look at them first and treat messaging as one feature among many. If you run a league and only need the messaging layer, RallyText has a free organization account where each team pays its own plan; see leagues.
Are there minors on the roster?
If you coach youth, the U.S. Center for SafeSport's rules on one-to-one electronic communication apply to you regardless of the tool. General-purpose apps leave compliance up to each adult. RallyText copies a second adult on every direct message to a minor automatically; see Safe Sport texting. Whatever you pick, make sure your policy is enforced by the tool, not by memory.
Frequently asked questions
Is GroupMe shutting down?
No. The GroupMe app and groupme.com continue. What is ending is SMS mode, the option to take part in a group by plain text message without the app. GroupMe announced in August 2026 that it is winding down two-way SMS on a rolling basis: the next time a member receives a group message by text they get a notice and a 7-day countdown, after which group messages stop arriving by SMS. Verification codes and invite texts still arrive by SMS. Details on our
GroupMe SMS shutdown page.
What is the closest replacement for GroupMe's SMS mode?
For a group that needs members to receive and reply by plain text on any phone, the closest matches are a tool with real SMS delivery or a carrier group text. RallyText's Group Thread works the way GroupMe's SMS mode did: members text a keyword to join, every message arrives as a normal SMS, and replies go back the same way, without anyone's personal number being shared. Remind also lists SMS text as a delivery option. A plain carrier group text works for very small groups but exposes everyone's number and has no admin controls.
Which GroupMe alternatives are free?
BAND, WhatsApp, Signal and Discord are free. Heja has a free ad-supported tier, TeamSnap has a free plan for teams of fewer than 15 players, Remind Chat is free with a 150-participant limit per class, and Slack has a free plan with 90 days of message history. Every one of those free options except Remind requires members to install an app, so they replace GroupMe's app experience, not its SMS mode. RallyText is paid, from $10/mo for broadcast-only and $29/mo for two-way plans, with a 3-day free trial.
Do I need a paid tool to replace GroupMe?
Only if you need something GroupMe never offered. If your whole group has smartphones and will install an app, a free app like BAND, Heja, WhatsApp or GroupMe itself is fine. You generally pay for one of three things: plain-SMS delivery to members who will not or cannot use an app, a dedicated team number that is not your personal cell, or compliance features like Safe Sport auto-CC for teams with minors. If none of those apply, stay free.
Need the plain-SMS option?
One message, every phone, no app. Replies private to you, or a Group Thread when you want one. 3-day free trial, no credit card.
